Situation in May 2022:

In May 2022 we visited the foundation Khule Africa in Kampala, Uganda. They are located in the southern district of Ggaba, which used to be a swamp. Years ago, the swamp was filled with earth and a compound of small houses was built.

Through the concept of dance, the organization offers a vision for the children and allows them to live in this orphanage and go to school. At that time, eight girls were living in this one-room house with an attached kitchen.

At that time, the roof of the house was leaking, and there was no functioning drainage system for the courtyard. When it rained, water seeped into the interior walls of the building, leading to mold growth. In addition, water regularly pooled 40 to 50 centimeters deep in the courtyard because there was no drainage system. This made the living conditions very difficult, especially during the rainy season.

Renovation August – September 2024:

Since the building needed to be renovated, the organization “the roof e.V.” was founded in Freiburg, Germany, in October 2023. Once the necessary funds for the renovation had been raised, the renovation work was finally carried out in August and September 2024.

Completion:

The renovation work included the demolition, replacement of the existing wood and iron sheet roof, new plastering of facades and interior walls, the painting work, the repair and installation of a new door, the renovation of the kitchen and the installation of a new drainage system for the courtyard, including the connection to the municipal sewer system. Toward the end of the construction work, two members of our NGO visited the construction site, the children and the project partners.
