Situation in May 2022:

In May 2022 we visited the foundation Khule Africa in Kampala, Uganda. They are located in the southern district of Ggaba, which used to be a swamp. Years ago, the swamp was filled with earth and a compound of small houses was built.

Through the concept of dance, the foundation offers a vision for children to live here as an orphanage. Currently eight girls are living in this one room apartment.

At that time, the roof was leaking and there was no functioning drainage system for the courtyard. When it rained, the water penetrated into the inner walls and caused mould in the building. Due to the lack of a drainage system, rainwater regularly stood up to 40-50cm high in the courtyard, which made living conditions very difficult during the rainy season.

Renovation August – September 2024:

Due to the need for renovation, the foundation the roof e.V. was established in Freiburg, Germany in October 2023. After raising the necessary funds, the renovation process finally took place during August and September 2024.

Completion:

In September 2024, the renovation of the roof, the plaster, the doors, the kitchen and the construction of a new drainage system for the courtyard were completed. During this time, two members of our NGO visited the children, the partners and the renovated apartment. In doing so, we have not fulfilled our claim to construct entirely sustainable, but rather our social approach.
